Yorkshire
Yorkshire covers a vast area and has three different National Parks
in the area, the North York Moors, Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District.
Then there is the east coast with its sandy beaches and high cliffs
looking out to the North Sea and most of it is protected as Heritage
Coast. Bridlington’s North and South beach, Flamborough South
Landing, Hornsea and Withernsea all have the Resort Seaside Award flags
and Bridlington North beach and Hornsea Central beach have been awarded
the prestigious Blue Flags. As well as the beach another great reason
to go to Hornsea is to visit the Hornsea Museum which is on the main
street and contains the largest display of Hornsea Pottery in the world,
Hornsea Mere is a bird sanctuary and a popular sailing spot. Bridlinton
has the Bempton Cliffs Nature Reserve, Bird of Prey Centre and a three
pool leisure complex with wave machines and slides in one of the pools.
'The Deep' in Hull is an amazing modern building shaped like a ship
which houses an aquarium that has the world's only underwater lift and
Europe's deepest viewing tunnel, there are 14 species of shark, Moray
Eels, Rays and hundreds of other sea creatures. Hull also has an Olympic
sized ice rink, the Ferens Art Gallery, Fort Paull which for centuries
was a gun battery and is now a museum, and the Streetlife Museum of
Transport which houses a collection of 200 years of land transport.
The Mother Shipton's Cave and Petrifying Well Park are a popular attraction,
Mother Shipton is probably England’s most famous Prophetess as
she foretold of things such as the Spanish Armada and the great fire
of London, the attraction is near Knaresborough. Two theme parks of
note in Yorkshire are the Lightwater Valley Amusement Park near Ripon
and Flamingo Land which is near Malton. Most of the cities in Yorkshire
have a wealth of museums some of which are quite niche but a lot of
which are extremely popular, such as the National Museum of Photography,
Film and Television in Bradford, the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds,
National Railway Museum, Jorvik, York Castle Museum and the Yorkshire
Museum in York and the National Coalmining Museum in Wakefield with
tours that take the visitor 140 meters below ground to get the real
feel of a mine. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is also in Wakefield, showing
modern and contemporary work in 500 acres of landscaped grounds.
North Yorkshire
North Yorkshire covers a vast area of land from the Yorkshire Dales
in the west to the North Sea coast in the east. The seaside resorts
along the coast include Scarborough, which could be the oldest resort
in the UK having been taking in visitors for the last 360 years, you
will find the Sea Life Marine Sanctuary here and the Atlantis Water
Park which has two of the largest water slides in Europe, there is also
a children's fun park called Kinderland and there are four theatres
to choose from. Whitby is overlooked by the ruins of a thirteenth century
abbey which was the inspiration for Bram Stoker's book, Dracula, as
well as a great beach you will find the Captain Cook Memorial Museum,
the Dracula Experience and the Whitby Museum, also keep an eye put in
the shops for the unique Whitby Jet jewellery. Bridlington has a lifeboat
museum, a busy harbour and fun attractions for all the family, including
the popular all-weather Leisure World. Filey has a five-mile stretch
of award winning sandy beaches and you could try out surfing, yachting
or perhaps a bit of fishing here, Filey also has a museum and as with
all seaside resorts there are plenty of restaurants to choose from.
There are lots of castles and ancient ruins including abbeys dotted
about all over North Yorkshire, some castles of note are Helmsley Castle,
which is a medieval castle, Bolton Castle is a spectacular mediaeval
fortress,and at over 900 years old, Skipton Castle is one of the most
complete and best preserved medieval castles in England and is well
worth a visit. Some of the abbey's include Bolton Abbey on the banks
of the River Wharfe and Fountains Abbey which is a ruined Cistercian
monastery which is set in the grounds of Fountains Estate which has
a visitor centre, water gardens and tea rooms. There are a several theme
parks to visit too if you find yourself at a loose end, these include;
Lightwater Valley Amusement Park near Ripon which has around 40 rides
including roller coasters, catering for different ages, there is a bird
of prey centre there too although this is a seperate attraction. Flamingo
Land which is near Malton it is a theme park with eight roller coasters
and it also has a zoo and there are lots of flamingos as you may have
guessed, and there are also several family shows throughout the day.
York is rich with history and has many museums and attractions which
include; the National Railway Museum, Jorvik, York Castle Museum and
the Yorkshire Museum and the impressive York Minster and many other
attractions too. If you enjoy a pint of real ale or have just wondered
